Setting a specific kernel or alternate OS to boot by default (GUI)
When Ubuntu boots, normally briefly screen that says "GRUB loading. please wait… Press Esc to enter the menu…" appears.
If you want to always see the GRUB menu (to enter command-line options, for instance) and you are using Ubuntu Desktop edition, you can install the StartUp Manager utility to easily set any OS as the default one.
  1. Install the StatUp Manager utility (package: startupmanager)
  2. Go to System > Administration > StartUp-Manager . Enter your main administrative password if necessary.
  3. In the first tab ("Boot options"), change the value for "Default operating system" accordingly.
  4. Optionally, also change the Timeout value or disable it completely to make it easier to access the GRUB menu at boot.
  5. Click "Close" to confirm your changes.
During next boot your changes will be effective and your system will boot into whatever default OS you specified.
